Create It Simply: Handmade Holidays

Those who are familiar with my work know my motto is just like the blog says "Create It Simply". For my Handmade Holidays project I decided on an easy handmade gift for my granddaughter, Emerald. This will be her first Christmas so I thought I would make something that she could use now but also have as a keepsake in the years to come. I chose to make a no-sew embellished blanket similar in technique to this snowflake pillow I made back in July. Emerald loves fuzzy blankets and toys so this will be perfect for snuggle time plus fuzzy blankets, like the one below, can often be found inexpensively at many dollar stores.

To make this a one-of-a-kind blanket I used one of my favorite no-sew adhesive products, Therm O Web Heat'n Bond Ultrahold. Note that this is a completely no-sew adhesive so if you want to add any stitching to the project you'll want to go with Heat'n Bond Lite with the purple label.

Following the manufacturer's instructions, attach Heat N Bond to the back of your desired felt or fabric using your iron.

Next, die-cut your desired images from the felt/fabric. I chose to use an older set of Sizzix alphabet dies for my design along with the Stacked Snowflakes dies. These particular letters are 4-inches in height but a set such as the Serif Essentials die set would work equally well. While Sizzix steel rule dies are my first choice for cutting perfect letters and shapes, it should be noted that you can also trace or draw a pattern onto the paper backing and cut it out with scissors if you so desire. Once the shapes are cut, simply remove the paper backing and iron the pieces onto the blanket according to the manufacturer's instructions.

That's all there is to it! A simple blanket, felt or fabric, cutting tools, iron and some Therm O Web Heat'n Bond Ultrahold. But don't stop there! Using this same technique you can create all sorts of exciting gifts and home decor items in a snap!!

One last look at the finished results:
